Become a Mentor

Mentors Are:

  • At least 18 years of age with a valid drivers license and reliable transportation
  • Ordinary people who are willing to VOLUNTEER their time to share their hobbies/talents
  • People who want to make a difference
  • Able to relate to children and adults
  • Mature, reliable, and of good character
  • Are able to make a commitment to meet with a child 2 - 4 times per month for at least one year

How Do I Become a Mentor?

  • Potential volunteers contact The Guidance Center and we gather some basic information
  • We will mail you an application and schedule an interview with you
  • At the time of your interview, we will provide an orientation and answer all of your questions
  • Following your interview, Big Brothers Big Sisters program staff will complete your background and reference checks
  • Upon successful completion of this process, you will be matched with a child that meets your preferences and shares your interests. If we do not have a child on our wait list that meets your preferences, then we will request a referral from a school or other organization. Mentors are not typically placed on a wait list, as there are always more children waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister than there are mentors available.
